Here's a very useful article on how to remove and re-apply skateboard griptape. Griptape is super important to have on your skateboard without griptape you have no real grip and if you have no real grip how can you stay on your skateboard? Best word of advice always use skateboard griptape. Hopefully our article will help you out. If for some reason you have any questions feel free to contact us.
Here's a few things you need to get it done:
*Razor
*Hairdryer or something that can blow heat.
*Paint Scraper
*Skate Tool
*Griptape
*A good hard flat surface
-Step 1: Well first you need to remove all
hardware from your skateboard deck i.e. screws, bolts, nuts, trucks and risers if you have them. You can leave your wheels and bearings on your trucks. No need to remove them unless you're planning on changing them.
-Step 2: Never try to put new
griptape over old griptape. We do repeat NEVER. You may wonder why? Why ask why? Just take our expertise advice.
-Step 3: In case we didn't mention it, this is not going to be a quick job. It's actually going to require several minutes of your time. Get your hairdryer or blowing device and start blowing it over your board for about 2-3 minutes, longer is better if you want to make the job easier. We recommend heating up one end of the board at a time. After a few minutes it will start peeling, but if it doesn't you can still start to peel it yourself. Take the paint scraper and start scraping it against your board. You can also use the razor to do this if you want, but it's a lot easier to stick with the paint scraper and it's more safe. The grip tape will come up in parts. Once it starts to pop up off the board you can peel it with your fingers. Here's a tip we've been told from other skateboarders. To make this easier peel the griptape slowly and evenly, if you don't it will rip. You'll end up starting over again. Which guess what? Makes the whole process take even longer. We recommend you use a buddy for this process simply because you want to keep using your hairdryer/blower blowing while you're scraping and peeling. You're going to repeat this process several times, but trust us it will work and be worth it in the end. Don't worry if you leave a few little pieces behind, it's not a big deal.
-Step 4: Get your new griptape ready. First off, peel the paper backing off the new griptape. Next stretch it out over the board and make sure the board is completely covered. Try to place the griptape on straight and even. It's very important that you cover the whole surface of the deck. Once you have it laid out make sure there's no air pockets, if there is get them out. An air pocket could cause your new griptape to damage earlier than usual.
-Step 5: Now take your
skate tool and put a screwdriver tip on it and use it to etch a thin white line on the grip side of the new griptape around the edge of your board. Making this white line is important as gives you guidance on where to cut and trim your new griptape.
-Step 6: Ok you're almost done! Take your razor and cut out the board. This should be very simple and I'm sure you've seen it done before at your local skate shop and then wonder why you're paying them to do such an easy job. If your edges are rough after you do this, carefully trim the sides closer. Now re-install all of your hardware. Bingo! You're done and ready to trick out!
